The NHL season is officially back! Yesterday, I photographed the Calgary Flames season opener for Imagn Images. While I normally save my favourite shots for a monthly recap blog, I decided to do something different this time and show you what it looks like to cover a single game.
Because this is a farewell season at the Scotiabank Saddledome, I arrived earlier than usual. I wanted to capture the arena before it filled with fans.

From the quiet arena, I went outside to document the Flames’ red carpet arrivals. The setup was great for fans, allowing them to get up close to the players for photos and autographs.

From there, it was time to head back in for warmups. This period serves a dual purpose: I run a test on my FTP connection to ensure seamless photo transmission once the game starts, and I grab a few player photos. It’s also when I can play with my shutter speed, and experiment with different vantage points. 🙂

I started the game with an elevated photo position with hopes to get a nice wide-angle shot and maybe something with a center ice logo in it.

I didn’t get many nice action shots but it was a good opportunity to get a shot of the coach while I was up here 🙂

For the second and third periods I relocated to my usual photo position on the ice level with hopes to get some nice action shots.

I was pretty happy to get some nice shots of this goal by Seattle Kraken center Chandler Stephenson (9)

When I’m shooting I’m always on the lookout to get any non-action shots as well. Here I took a photo of the Calgary Flames assistant coach Trent Cull on the players’ bench.

The game didn’t really go well for the Calgary Flames and they lost 6-1.
